Mother's Day is one of the most emotional family holidays, celebrated with love and gratitude towards mothers. Although its meaning is universal, the date of celebration varies depending on the country. What accounts for these discrepancies?

Different Dates in Europe

There is no single established date for Mother's Day that applies throughout Europe. Below are a few examples:

  • Poland – May 26

  • Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Belgiumsecond Sunday of May

  • France, Sweden – the last Sunday of May (or the first Sunday of June, if it coincides with Pentecost)

  • Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Lithuania – first Sunday of May

  • United Kingdom and Ireland – the fourth Sunday of Lent (Mothering Sunday, most often in March)

  • Russia, Belarus – the last Sunday of November

  • Norway – second Sunday of February

  • Serbia, Macedonia, Slovenia – March 8 (together with International Women's Day)

Why are these dates different?

1. Christian Tradition

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Mother's Day originates from the celebration of "Mothering Sunday," which is the Sunday of returning to the "mother church" during Lent. Over time, this holiday became associated with motherhood.

2. The Impact of the American Initiative

In the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, and many other European countries, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. This is due to the influence of the American custom initiated by Anna Jarvis, which was officially recognized in the USA in 1914. Western culture, especially after World War II, had a significant impact on the adoption of this date in Central Europe.

3. Local Traditions

In Poland, Mother's Day falls on May 26th—a unique date that has been observed since 1923, when the holiday was first organized in Krakow. Unlike its neighbors, Poland did not adopt the American date.

In contrast, in Russia and Belarus, Mother's Day is a relatively new holiday—established in the 1990s—and falls on the last Sunday of November. In Balkan countries, such as Serbia, it is often combined with the celebration of International Women's Day (March 8th).

Mother's Day – Shared Values Despite Differences

Although Mother's Day is celebrated on different dates, its significance remains unchanged. It is a time to express love, gratitude, and respect towards women who dedicate themselves to their children. Regardless of the date, the essence is the same everywhere: to appreciate mothers and their irreplaceable role in the life of every individual.
