Our chess set draws on the traditions of the Byzantine Empire, which dominated southeastern Europe and Asia Minor for nearly 1,000 years. The chess pieces are inspired by the era of the famous Macedonian dynasty, whose members sat on the imperial throne from 867 to 1056.
During the Macedonian dynasty, Byzantium entered a phase of development and flourishing known as the Byzantine Renaissance. The Byzantines honored the classical period, expanding it with Christian elements that became an inspiration for the art of later eras. It was a time of prosperity, prestige, and military power for the Empire.
