The praxinoscope is a 19th-century optical apparatus used for animation shows. It was invented in 1877 by the French pioneer of film technology, Émile Reynaud. The design is based on an open rotating drum, inside which a paper strip with a sequence of consecutive images is placed. The key element of the device is an internal cylinder covered with mirrors. As the drum rotates, the mirrors eliminate the blurring effect, and the human eye perceives a smooth, moving image. It was the direct technological predecessor of today’s cinema.
