History of the Map

A decorative map of the world made by Gerard Valck in 1686. Orbis Terrarum Nova Et Accurata Tabula is an elegantly decorated double-hemisphere map of the world – a magnificent example of Dutch Baroque cartography. It is a fascinating summary of geographical knowledge at the end of the 17th century, explaining a number of issues, although some still remain unanswered. California is shown here as an island, while the outline of the northern coast of America remains hypothetical. The shape of Australia and New Guinea, which are joined here, also leaves room for doubt. The location of New Zealand is also uncertain. The northern part of Japan is highly distorted, while the northernmost island, Hokkaido, is connected to Russia. The mythical lakes Lac Parime and Lac Xarayes are shown in South America. Scenes full of Baroque dynamism depicting the four seasons are placed in the corners of the border.

The map comes from Gerard Valck's atlas “Nova totius Geographia...” published in Amsterdam around 1686.
