Sir Howard Staunton was considered one of the best chess players in the world in the 19th century. Unofficial world champion from 1843 to 1851. He was involved not only in practical chess play. He was also an organizer of chess life, a journalist and author of chess textbooks, a recognized theorist of the game of chess, and a creator of rules concerning both the game itself and the way it was played. From 1845, for the next 29 years, he edited the chess column in the London newspaper Illustrated London News, becoming the most influential chess columnist in the world. In 1847, he published Chess-Player's Handbook, the best-known of his series of chess books. In 1849, Staunton endorsed a set of chess pieces designed by Nathaniel Cook and produced by John Jaques. He recommended the pieces in his chess newspaper. Their shape became the most popular standard for chess pieces in the world, still used today in most chess tournaments.
